Reflection

For the past 2 months, I have learnt how to summarize points from an article by extracting the relevant main points. In addition, I learnt how to include my own opinions through the writing of the reader response and realized how to differentiate my opinions from the author’s view. Writing the problem solution essay allowed me to organize my essay with a clear structure so that is easy for readers to understand by ensuring my point of view is presented clearly. Besides learning the essay structure, I also learnt how do write a proper thesis statement and topic statement. We also worked on the referencing skills where the APA citation is used as it is essential that we credit the author when borrowing their ideas in order to prevent plagiarism. Through all these exercises, I have indeed improved my English language as I understand my glaring grammatical errors such as verb tense, verb form, word form and subject-verb agreement. Furthermore, the online grammar exercises were helpful in checking my understanding and enhanced what I have learnt in class.
For week 10-12, I would like to learn how to rephrase sentences more accurately as I always have the tendency to paraphrase it with a different meaning. It is also quite difficult to link different ideas together in a coherent way. I often make grammar mistakes unconsciously and thus I need to be more careful when writing and ensure that I check my essay thoroughly for any errors.
I did make changes in the summary and reader response because I did not understand some of the comments. A few comments are hard to comprehend as they are not fully explained. However, in general, most of the comments are useful in guiding me to make changes to my summary and reader response.
I am quite accurate in grading the content, organisation and language. My organisation is quite alright but there is a lack of content for my summary and reader response. On top of that, my language also did not fare very well as there are constant grammatical errors that I have made in my writing.
In my opinion, I feel that both the audio and written feedback is good ways to get feedback. However, the audio feedback would further enhance learning. It provides better explanations since it is more comprehensive and easy to understand as compared to written feedback. After listening to the audio feedback, I am able to understand the comments and edit my mistakes with certainty. Indeed, incorporating audio and written feedback in other courses would be useful especially if the tutor do not have time for consultation. This is also convenient as students can refer to these comments anytime.

My English Language Learning Journey (edited)

Living in Singapore, a multi-lingual society, it is important to master English and our own Mother Tongue in order to communicate with people effectively. Knowing the importance of the English Language, the Singapore Education System is also skewed to promote such awareness and cultivate an English-speaking environment. Since young, I have been exposed to the art of the English Language where we learn grammar, vocabulary, comprehension and summary. I am able to apply all the skills that i have learnt to real life situations such as interacting with other people and writing an article. However, my language is not very strong as i do not have a very strong foundation of the English Language. This has impeded my ability to express my views freely. For example, in the past, I could not find the appropriate words to convey my message effectively and this has impacted me badly. After realising its importance, I began to read some self-help books to broaden my horizon and improve on my language. Reading books has certainly improved my English as i learnt how to structure my thoughts. Learning English is an on-going process and we should not stop learning from it. I hope that through this English module, I would be able to learn new skills and brush up my vocabulary which will help me to attain a better concept of the English Language.
